Life Course Game: Adapted to Reflect Unique Population

Using the Life Course Game created by CityMatCH and Contra Costa Health Services is an excellent way to encourage students to think about the impact of health disparities that begin in childhood but last a lifetime. The UNM Pediatric Pulmonary Center Training Faculty asked students to develop game components (biographies, red and green cards) that reflect the unique issues of living in a rural state and at altitude for children with pulmonary conditions. Students developed biographies reflecting Hispanic or Native American culture or living conditions (e.g., no running water or electricity found in remote areas of the Navajo Nation) or heating with wood for children living at 7000 feet or higher. Biographies were developed of children with cystic fibrosis or asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and issues around transportation to the clinic or money for gas or hotel when long-distance travel is required to access care. Access to resources such as groceries and pharmacies was also part of the cards the students created.
