A change in the terminology, from ?Mental Retardation? to ?Intellectual Disability? is an attempt to overcome negative meanings associated with the older term and also to increase accuracy (AAIDD, 2009). IDEA defines mental retardation as "significantly sub average general intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period that adversely affects a child's educational performance."
