Findings from a Developmental Pediatric Screening Clinic
Product Description:
According to researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 14% of children ages 3-17 are diagnosed with a developmental disability (Boyle et al., 2011). One in 88 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD; CDC, 2012). Many of these children are not identified until they enter school, and they miss the opportunity for early intervention and therefore improved prognosis. Thus, it is imperative that we screen children early for autism and other developmental disabilities. The purpose of the present study was to report the results of screening conducted on all children under age 5 seeking services at a university medical center-affiliated program for individuals with disabilities. The screening clinic was implemented to ensure children were directed to the most appropriate department and to decrease the time between referral and service provision.
