Dr. Kathleen Humphries, nutrition researcher with a doctorate in Nutrition Science, conducts research aimed at improving the quality of life of people with developmental or intellectual disabilities by improving the food systems in community-based group homes. The innovative system she developed called MENU-AIDDs is used at over 100 group homes in Montana to improve weight management, gastrointestinal health, and dietary intake. Currently Dr. Humphries is gathering evidence on the effect of improving food systems and dietary planning. Dr. Humphries provides training, workshops, and publications for individuals with disabilities, their families, residential services providers, and direct care staff. A company she founded called Good Nutrition Ideas (http://www.goodnutritionideas.com/index.html) helps extend the benefits of her work to 84,000 group homes across the nation. Dr. Humphries holds appointments at the University of Montana Rural Institute on Disabilities and the School of Public and Community Health Sciences. Her research has received grant funding from the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
