The AUCD Aging Special Interest Group is proud to host Dr. Katie Arnold and Dr. Tamar Heller of the University of Illinois-Chicago UCEDD in a discussion on Future Planning for people with disabilities. We will hear about future planning methods used across our network programs, the Future is Now program at the UIC UCEDD, and a moderated Q&A.

Dr. Katie Arnold is a strong disability advocate with a sense of social justice. Katie is a faculty member within the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She conducts inclusive research on family support, future planning, and self-determination of people with disabilities. Katie is the Founding Executive Director of the Sibling Leadership Network (SLN) where she helped to build the national network for siblings of people with disabilities from 2012 to 2022. The passion for her work is anchored to her experience growing up with her sister with intellectual disabilities. Katie’s sibling experience has shaped her worldview in many ways. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a B.S. in Sociology, Katie lived at L'Arche, a community based on mutual relationships where people with and without developmental disabilities live together. She received her Master’s in Disability and Human Development and her doctorate in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Katie lives in the Chicago area with her husband, Gary, who is also a disability advocate and their young child with DD.
