LEND and Learn June Session - LEND Trainee Mentoring: Mystery, Curiosity, and Wonder

The new LEND and Learn Monthly TA Series is an opportunity for LEND leadership and faculty to gather once a month to discuss priority TA topics and to learn from each other! Each month will focus on a different topic. Each session will be led by a different LEND program and includes a 15-minute presentation and 45 minutes of discussion. Please note that this is not a webinar series. Instead, it is designed to be an informal opportunity for LENDs to connect with one another on topics identified as top TA needs. DBP programs are welcome to participate. 

The first LEND and Learn session was held Monday, June 26th at 3 PM ET and focused on mentoring LEND trainees. The session was facilitated by Mark Fisher, Ph.D., RN, CNE, who shared about the LEND pilot mentor-mentee project developed at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). The discussion included LEND mentor-mentee processes, mentoring methods, and the importance of relationships and partnership development.

Presenter:

Mark J. Fisher, Ph.D., RN, CNE, is an Assistant Professor in the Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). He has a multilayered business background and over two decades of higher education experience. He conducts active learning activities, lectures, facilitates and debriefs clinical-focused simulations, and guides learners in the in-patient clinical setting. He is faculty in several graduate and undergraduate nursing and interdisciplinary education courses or programs on the OUHSC campus. He has delivered over 75 presentations focused primarily on communication in healthcare at the international, national, regional, and local levels.

Dr. Fisher's area of research interest is parent-provider communication in pediatric patient care. His work as an Oklahoma LEND (OKLEND) intern early in his career served as the stimulus for his scholarly endeavors, primarily with his interactions with the parent in the role of educator with OKLEND. Specific research and education research interests of his are predominantly directed toward cultivating parent advocacy and empathy with health care providers/professionals. He employs strength-based methods and an appreciative inquiry approach with all his education, research, and community service activities. Emerging areas of interest include nursing leadership in intellectual and developmental disabilities and LEND trainee mentoring.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Bentley University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Baylor University, a Master of Science in nursing education from the University of Oklahoma, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science from Indiana University.
