June 27, 2024

The “I Generate Rural Opportunities for Work” (iGROW) Project is a four-year pre-employment and leadership-training program in partnership with TWC’s Vocational Rehabilitation Program, for students with disabilities who are currently enrolled in high school (ages 14-22).

The purpose of the program is to provide a training environment to support students gain of the necessary skills and experiences in work readiness in order to successfully transition into postsecondary education and/or competitive integrated employment.

  • 62 students have been introduced to vocational rehabilitation and now have access to services.
  • 25 students have gained employment through Paid Work Experience in a field of their interest in their local rural area.
  • 26 students have participated in Vocational Adjustment Training.
  • 300 hours of training has been completed in Pre-Employment and Training Skills.
  • 12 community and parent trainings have been held.

The iGROW Summer Training Institute was held May 29-31, 2024 at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center in College Station, TX. 30 iGROW team members from across the state were in attendance. The Central and East Texas teams are established and continuing to grow. Central Texas will begin year 3 and East Texas will begin year 2 in the Fall. The West Texas site will begin implementation in the Fall of 2024. iGROW team members were provided intense training about implementation of the program, plus received additional training from individuals specializing in the special education field. Time was also provided to plan for the next school year as a team. All attendees provided positive feedback about the event!

The iGROW Central Texas Summer Kickoff Event was held on May 16, 2024 at the Lee County Youth Center. Over 40 students, families, employers, VR staff and iGROW team members were in attendance. Students and employers completed final paperwork and had a “signing” opportunity to begin the Paid Work Experience this summer.

This summer 15 students in the Central Texas Cohort and 11 students in the East Texas Cohort will receive Vocational Adjustment Training. 17 students in the Central Texas Cohort will participate in the Paid Work Experience.
