Ms. Miller entered the disability field working with older adults, earning her master's degree in gerontology from Baylor University and providing community-based services for over a decade. After transitioning into public education, she worked in local school districts for 19 years. Ms. Miller served as an autism specialist, assistive technology specialist, specialized programs coordinator, and secondary education coordinator, providing direct services to students and training, mentoring, and technical assistance to staff members and families.
As the Center's Director of Employment Programs, Ms. Miller and her staff work closely with the Texas Workforce Commission to implement the Statewide Capacity-Building Project, designed to improve Pre-Employment Transition Services for teens with disabilities. This project builds collaboration between schools and vocational rehabilitation professionals to improve students' transition outcomes. The project supports this mission through focus groups, regional training conferences, best practice showcases, training materials, and statewide conferences. Almost 500 educators and vocational rehabilitation professionals will attend this year's statewide conference in October.
She also oversees the Work-Based Learning Project to create work experiences for high school students with disabilities in Texas. Funded by the Texas Workforce Commission, this project provides startup funds, training, and technical assistance to selected school districts to create authentic, integrated work experiences. The project currently supports 89 school-based enterprises throughout Texas.
Ms. Miller's team also partners with the University of North Texas' Texas Beacons of Excellence Project(TBE). This pilot project works with schools, families, subminimum wage providers, and individuals with disabilities to increase access to competitive, integrated employment. Under Ms. Miller's leadership and dedication, these projects continue to expand throughout Texas. She is dedicated to the Center's mission and is a valuable asset to the Center.
