Product Description:
The bottom line for parents like Burt and Felty is that life with a developmentally disabled adult is hard. Families in our situations already deal with so much, Burt said. The isolation for our kind of family is very, very difficult. I don't get to hang out with girlfriends. My husband and I do not get to go out together. It takes a huge toll on our relationship. But we have sacrificed because it's really important to have him at home and do what we do. My hope for him is to have the best life possible and provide him with as much family support and family time as we can get, she said. It's a message that Felty wants policymakers and legislators to understand, as well. If you ask any family with a (developmentally disabled) child, we're just doing what we have to do to make life good, Felty said. We do everything we can, but we can't do it all. I could not work if (my daughter) didn't have support. Families will do their part, but they can't do it all.
