Product Description:
According to 2014 data from the CDC, presented by Ellen Bannister of the Center for Learning and Leadership, 27 percent of adult Oklahoman's have at least one form of disability, compared to the national rate of 22 percent. That includes developmental disabilities and mental impairments. She said when intellectually-disabled patients seek medical treatment, her research shows they dont receive the same quality medical care and attention to detail that able-bodied persons do, on average. She said they are less likely to receive dental coverage, get mammograms, prostate checkups and have an average life expectancy of just more than 50 years across the board. And, she said, many mentally impaired adults are going at it alone. Twenty-three percent of adults with [intellectual and developmental disabilities] reported that they have no best friend, nobody they can discuss personal things with," Bannister said. "Eleven percent reported that they consistently feel lonely.
