Product Description:
NCBC members have a wide range of abilities. While some members read proficiently, other members need support to read each word on the page. Similarly, verbal and communication skills vary among NCBC members. Some speak and communicate easily, while others do not speak at all. For people who are non-verbal or non-vocal, participating in group activities or conversations can be extremely difficult. The average rate of oral English speech ranges between 100-200 words/minute. However, the average rate for non-vocal communicators is 5 words per minute using a letter board, and 1 word per minute using a scanning device. As a result, communication partners may find themselves losing interest, interrupting, or changing topics. To facilitate more effective communication among NCBC members with all sorts of verbal abilities, NCBC staff created a tip sheet or set of strategies called Maximizing Communication with Nonverbal NCBC Members.
