Happiness, well-being, and character strengths: Outcomes for families and siblings of persons with mental retardation
Product Description:
After briefly describing the predominantly negative and "stress-and-coping" models previously employed in family research, this article presents two positive frameworks for understanding the effects of individuals with disabilities on their families. Ryff's 6-factor model of well-being and Peterson and Seligman's positive psychology model are both described, and next steps are outlined. With advances in the science of well-being and positive psychology, researchers and policymakers now have a language and framework to understand the positive effects of being a sibling or other family member of a person with disabilities.
