Product Description:
This exploratory study will attempt to examine prevailing attitudes toward children with mental illness using a convenience sample of N=150 adults on the island of St. Thomas. It is designed from one done by Corrigan et al. (2001) and is based on the goals of the project, which are to examine adult attitudes regarding children with mental illness as they relate to certain attributions adults make toward children with mental illness, how familiar adults are with children with mental illness, and the degree of social distance they desire from children with mental illness. The Level of Familiarity Questionnaire (LOF) will be used to examine familiarity with mental illness, the Social Distance Scale (SD) will assess the level of social distance desired from persons who have mental illness, and the Attribution Questionnaire (AQ-9) will assess the level of fear and dangerousness about individuals with mental illness. The demographic Questionnaire will collect relevant data such as age, gender, and education.. All questionnaires will be administered in English, Spanish, and French Creole to reflect the multi-cultural make-up of the community.
