Product Description:
NICU infants are at higher risk for suffering hearing loss (Coenraad, Goedegebure, van Goudoever, and Hoeve, 2010). Use of a ventilator, asphyxia, and low birth weight are risk factors that have been linked with hearing loss (Coenraad et al., 2010). Hearing loss can lead to delayed language development and academic difficulties (Martinez-Cruz, Poblano, Fernandez-Carrocera, 2008). Participants included 239 NICU graduates who passed hearing screens in the NICU, but failed a hearing screen at a 6-month follow-up visit. Data were collected on identified risk factors for hearing loss (e.g., birth weight) and other possible risk factors (e.g., ECMO). Additionally, data were collected on later referral for services and scores on the Bayley-II and the M-CHAT. Analyses were conducting examining the impact of risk factors on hearing loss at a 6-month follow-up visit and the impact of hearing loss on referral for services and scores on the Bayley-II and M-CHAT.
