The Effects of the Excuse-Me Drill on a Toddler's Independent Sleep Initiation Across Contexts in a 2-Year Old Participant
Product Description:
Twenty to thirty percent of children struggle with bedtime resistance and frequent nighttime awakenings (Kuhn & Elliott, 2003). These children often lack independent sleep initiation skills related to 'nonadaptive' sleep associations. Although several behavioral treatments are well-established for these sleep problems, few specifically target the skill of independent sleep initiation. The Excuse-Me Drill facilitates independent sleep initiation by using differential attention to reinforce sleep compatible behaviors. This study evaluated the Excuse-Me Drill by employing a multiple baseline design across contexts in a 2-year old participant, "Hunter." Following the implementation of treatment at bedtime, night wakings, and nap times, there was a visible change in "Hunter's" independent sleep initiation on a sleep diary. Additional gains in sleep quality were observed.
