Product Description:
2-Unit Course for Public Health Master's students. Disabilities will be presented using a life-course approach and discussions will target disabilities in vulnerable populations emphasizing prevention and rehabilitation as a global rights issue. Students will learn about some of the difficulties individuals with disabilities have in navigating the "system", their environment, and the barriers individuals with a disability face in trying to change policies to improve their lives. The course will utilize a service/learning format in that students will work in small teams in an advocacy disability agency to learn how the agency functions while also performing some useful service to the agency. With the assistance of the agency, the team will select an issue that is troublesome for individuals with disabilities. They will research the issue, develop a policy change, and amass data that will constitute the basis of arguments for the policy change and this will constitute a term paper.
