Product Description:
Background: The level of participation in community activities is a critical outcome measure for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) as stressed by the WHO International Classification of Function (ICF). In recent years there has been increased attention paid to the early recognition and treatment of children with ASD, but how their level of participation in family, school, and community activities compares with typically developing children has not been studied.
Objective: To compare participation in family, school and community activities of school-aged children with ASD to that of typically developing children.
Design/Methods: Using the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) we compared responses of 819 parents of children 5-17 with a current diagnosis of ASD with the responses of 52,762 parents of children who did not meet the NSCH definition of a child with special health care needs, i.e., typically developing children.
