Developmental Disabilities: From Biology to Policy

This undergraduate and medical school seminar course discusses current concepts about disability from both the medical and social models. Students learn about 3 disabilities in depth in terms of their biological basis. They also learn public policies that have improved function for individuals with those disabilities. Learning objectives: By conclusion of the course, participants will be able to
1. Contrast medical and social definitions of disability
2. Discuss the biological basis of intellectual, mobility, and social-communication disabilities as it is currently understood and how it influences new approaches to treatment
3. Evaluate how federal and state laws, regulations, and funding mechanisms affect the functioning of individuals with disabilities
4. Evaluate the impact of your own personal and cultural attitudes, beliefs, and values on your experiences with individuals with disabilities
