Progression of ALS on Tongue Strength and Endurance
Product Description:
Purpose: The aim of the study was to determine decline in tongue force and endurance in ALS.
Methods: The Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI; IOPI Medical, LLC) was used to measure tongue force and endurance in 10 individuals with ALS and 10 non-neurologically impaired control participants. Longitudinal decline was also recorded for one individual over four sessions at 1, 3, 5, and 8 months.
Results: The ALS group displayed decreased tongue force and endurance compared to the control group. Longitudinal data also suggests a decrease in force and endurance over time.
Conclusion: Tongue force and endurance measures may serve as sensitive measures to track disease progression and speech intelligibility decline.
