HEALTH; Mental Illness in Intellectual Disability. Characteristics of having a mental illness and impact of stress and social support
Product Description:
The co-occurrence of a mental illness with Intellectual Disability (ID) known as ?dual diagnosis? is a topic of great interest for researchers. Adult with ID are, at minimum, on par with the general population for being diagnosed with mental illness; however, it is also theorized that mental disorders are under diagnosed in this population. This may be due to a variety of factors such as communication difficulties, unusual symptom presentation, or inability to verbally express symptoms, all which decrease the likelihood of being diagnosed..
Given the high rates of dual diagnosis and the challenges associated with diagnosis mental illness in the ID population it is important to further our understand of risk and protective factors in the development and maintenance of mental health problems and examine characteristics of those diagnosed with a mental illness. This study examined these questions in a large nationally representative sample.
