Product Description:
Children were identified as having a disability if a parent responded ?yes? to the question ?Is your child limited or prevented in any way in his or her ability to do the things most children of the same age can do?? and this limitation was due to a medical condition that has lasted, or will last, for a period of at least 12 months. Siblings residing in a household with a child with disability have significantly greater internalizing and externalizing socialization and behavioral problems than children residing in households with typically developing children. This study is the largest known comparing sibling groups in the United States. Families, health care providers and agencies who provide services to children with disabilities must be made aware of the significant impact on the mental health status of siblings residing in households with a child with disability. Age-appropriate support groups and sibling respite care have been demonstrated to help siblings cope and adapt.
