Results of a Culturally Responsive Special Education Curriculum; Putting the I in the IEP

This paper illustrated the effectiveness of a culturally responsive curriculum used in a 2009-2012 Native Hawaiian Education project conducted in Hawai?i intermediate schools designed to increase the involvement of Native Hawaiian intermediate school students with disabilities in the development and monitoring of their own individualized education plans (IEPs). A scale was utilized to provide information on students? capacity for planning and goal-setting and observational instruments were developed to measure students? level of engagement in class and students?, parents? involvement in their IEP meetings. Interviews and focus groups were also held. Quantitative and qualitative results indicated improved student outcomes, including a significant increase in: a) student perceptions of self-determination; b) student class engagement and c) students? involvement in their IEP meetings.
