Addressing disparities for people with disabilities from underserved racial and ethnic groups
Product Description:
This study reviewed current efforts to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health care and health promotion and determine to what extent adults with disabilities from underserved racial and ethnic groups were included in these efforts. We reviewed abstracts of currently funded federal grants in NIH RePORTER, and obtained abstracts from efforts funded by foundations through web-based searches and directly from project officers. We also contacted multicultural health liaisons in state offices of minority health and solicited project descriptions. Only a small percentage of the thousands of reviewed abstracts of federally funded disparities work included people with disabilities as a subgroup of interest, and none of the foundation-funded initiatives addressed this population. Further, based on information provided by representatives at state Offices of Minority Health or the equivalent, adults with disabilities were not being explicitly included in efforts to reduce disparities
