Healthcare barriers for people with disabilities from underserved racial and ethnic groups
Product Description:
We conducted a systematic scoping review of the literature to determine what is currently known about barriers to healthcare experienced by people with disabilities from underserved racial and ethnic groups. Ten articles met all inclusion criteria. The most frequently described barriers to healthcare were: uninsurance, insurance type, language, low education level, patient feelings, and no usual source of care. Nine of the studies included findings about barriers related to race or ethnicity, most of which were consistent with previous racial and ethnic health disparity literature. Only one study reported a disability-related barrier; this barrier had also been observed (along with many others) in disability-specific literature. None of the studies framed their research such that they could answer the question of what unique or magnified barriers may be experienced by people of color with disabilities.
