Product Description:
This phenomenological qualitative study sought to understand the relationship of adult learning strategies and the experience of registered dietitians (RD) in knowledge acquisition through continuing professional education (CPE). Participants were selected though snowball sampling. Four RDs were scheduled for two interviews, each one to two hours long, in 2011. One was a semi-structured interview, the other a document elicitation of the last completed Professional Development Portfolio. All interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Interviews were analyzed using traditional thematic analysis, with data coded, grouped into similar categories, and categories arranged into themes. Themes developed around access to CPE, need for critical thinking skills in practice, and the value of both formal and informal learning. Illustrative quotes are provided to support themes. Findings are examined in the light of adult learning strategies from Knowles, Kolb, and Merriam.
