S. 1a Improving public health competencies in public health training
Product Description:
Public health training is defined primarily by the terminal masters of public health degree (MPH). There are broad competencies required for graduates of accredited MPH degree programs. These expectations do not include that students acquire an awareness of disability. At IDD, we have tackled these deficits in several ways including a stand-alone graduate course, graduate and undergraduate seminars and lectures, and by publishing resources. Resources include a standalone textbook, chapters within broader public health texts, and peer-reviewed articles. One key strategy for integrating disability content and awareness into public health is to apply the ICF framework to the current social ecological model of public health. Common themes across disability and public health also include developing an understanding across the lifespan, and considering the environment and context of all people regardless of function. We introduce how concepts and models can complement each other.
