Product Description:
We describe the annual prevalence of sexual abuse among community dwelling older adults in the United States. We also describe factors associated with experiencing sexual abuse. We used data from 46,819 older adults from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System pooled across 24 states and three years (2005-2007). We estimated prevalence of sexual abuse, bivariate distributions, and odds ratio associations across demographic, behavioral, physical and mental health, and contextual factors. Results show that 0.8% of older adults reported experiencing sexual abuse in the previous year. This represents approximately 278,479 community dwelling older adults. Race, Income, employment status, marital status, lack of life satisfaction, poor mental health, and low levels of emotional support were all significantly associated with experiencing recent sexual abuse.
