During the month of September, we mark the 51st anniversary of the passage of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. To commemorate the first civil rights legislation for people with disabilities, DETAC welcomes two disability-led national organizations to discuss employment – the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) and the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL). They will highlight how their work increases access to competitive, integrated employment nationally and how they collaborate with Centers for Independent Living (CIL) in all geographical locations across the country to do so. This webinar is intended for CILs but is applicable to other Administration on Disabilities stakeholders, as well as self-advocates and family members who want to learn about additional resources to boost employment outcomes.

ACL’s Grassroots Project was launched in 2023 to support the work of disability advocates to ensure the perspectives, priorities and preferences of disabled people are reflected in disability policies and service systems. A key focus of the Grassroots Project is supporting partnership development and facilitating collaboration among national, state and local disability advocates. The project also supports outreach and education to help people with disabilities stay informed about policies that affect them.
This national webinar — the third hosted by the Grassroots Project — will bring together state and local advocates and coalitions to discuss best practices for establishing common goals and collaborating to achieve them, and for ensuring disabled people are leading the charge to drive change. We will hear from ABLE South Carolina, Disability Policy Consortium Massachusetts, and the Ohio Olmstead Task Force on how working in cross-disability, disability-led, and community-driven frameworks propels disability advocacy forward and creates momentum for advancing disability rights.
