GRADUATE RESEARCH TRAINING
Post-doctoral Fellowship, Civitan International Research Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham (August 1999 - August 2000)
Fellowship involved research experience, grant writing, clinical services, and administrative duties. Research experience involved facilitating the research team that established the design of the evaluation and assessments to be conducted with the UAB Early Head Start families. Additional research experience was gained through co-coordinating the statewide Children's Trust Fund Evaluation Project of the Welfare-to-Work Programs. Responsibilities included overseeing data collection procedures, analytical strategies, and dissemination of information at the local and state levels. Grant writing experience was obtained through preparing and writing grants to foundations and the federal government. Clinical services were performed through developmental assessments conducted with the children in the UAB Early Head Start Program, including the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Differential Ability Scales, Kent Inventory of Developmental Skills, Bates Infant Temperament Scales, Child Behavior Checklists, and MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory. Administrative skills were gained through supervising research assistants, graduate students and data collectors; coordinating and managing the daily activities of the projects; coordinating statewide meetings regarding the project; and analyzing and reporting information to the principal investigators, Drs. Sharon L. Ramey, Robin G. Lanzi, and Fred J. Biasini.
Dissertation Research, Comprehensive Child Development Program (January 1998 - July 1999)
Synthesized the results of an extensive literature review and wrote a theoretical paper entitled "A Review of Social Competency and the Social Development of Preschool Children Living in Poverty and Children with Prenatal Drug-Exposure." Dissertation research examined the social development of children living in poverty with and without prenatal drug-exposure and children from middle-income families. Defended and completed dissertation research entitled "The Social Development of Preschool Children Living in Poverty with and without Prenatal Drug-Exposure and Children in Middle Income Families." Chair and Principal Investigator: Fred J. Biasini.
Master's Thesis Research, Comprehensive Child Development Program (January 1997 - December 1997)
Independently completed all aspects of research including proposal, design, subject recruitment and scheduling, data collection, entry, and analysis, and preparation of the final manuscript. Developed and tested models examining the relationship among stress, social support, psychological adjustment, and self-esteem of African American children living in poverty. Wrote two research articles explaining the results of the study. One has been published in a scientific journal and the other is in the process of submission.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY TRAINING

Conducted clinical assessments on over 550 children-trained and proficient in administering and interpreting the following child assessments:
Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), Bayley Scales of Infant Development II, Differential Ability Scales, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Inventory, Child Behavior Checklists, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test III, Beery Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration, Matching Familiar Figures Test, Child Attention Problems Scale, Conners' Continuous Performance Test, Restricted Academic Task, the Human Figure Drawings, Kent Inventory of Developmental Skills, Bates Infant Temperament Scales, and MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory.
UAB Early Head Start Program, Civitan International Research Center, Sparks Clinics UAB (July 1999 - Present)
Provide cognitive assessments and screenings to children living in poverty enrolled in an intensive three-year intervention program. Wrote summary reports, which interpreted the results of testing. (Note: This is part of a national program of interventions funded by the Administration of Children, Youth, and Families.)
Autism Clinic, Civitan International Research Center, Sparks Clinics UAB (October 2007 - Present)
Conduct assessments with children in the Autism Clinic to determine if they have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). Administered, scored, and interpreted the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) assessments of children between the ages of 2 and 12. Consult with the Autism Clinic team to discuss findings and recommendations. Completed summary reports conveying diagnostic impressions to assist families, schools, and providers with treatment and service programs.
Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Clinic, Civitan International Research Center, Sparks Clinics (January 1999 - August 1999)
Completed assessments, summary reports, feedback sessions with the family, and referrals of children and adolescents presenting with ADHD characteristics. Evaluations included administration and interpretation of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test III and the Beery Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration, the Matching Familiar Figures Test, the Child Attention Problems Scale, the Conners' Continuous Performance Test, the Restricted Academic Task-in clinic structured observational behavior ratings, and the Human Figure Drawings. In addition, Child Behavior Checklists obtained from teachers and parents were scored and interpreted. Supervisor: Bart Hodgens, Ph.D.

Administered, scored, and interpreted cognitive, adaptive, and behavioral assessments of children between the ages of 3 and 10 with developmental, learning, behavioral, or health concerns. Testing included the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II, the Differential Ability Scales, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Inventory, and the Child Behavior Checklist. Participated in multidisciplinary Child Development staff meetings to discuss findings and recommendations. Completed reports conveying diagnostic impressions and referrals. Infant Toddler Clinic, Civitan International Research Center, Sparks Clinics (September 1996 - December 1998)
Conducted developmental evaluations of infants from 8 months to 3 years of age. Assessed children using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II and the Vineland Scales of Adaptive Behavior. Summary reports including recommendations were compiled after reviewing the medical history, completing and interpreting the psychology evaluation, and attending the multidisciplinary staff meetings. Multiple Disabilities Clinic, Civitan International Research Center, Sparks Clinics (September 1996 - December 1998)
Provided psychological evaluations of children and adolescents with multiple needs and disabilities including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, speech/language disorders, genetic disorders, and vision or hearing disorders. Conducted cognitive, adaptive, and behavioral assessments. Consulted with the multidisciplinary team to orchestrate appropriate individual plans including their family. Newborn Follow-Up Clinic, Children's Hospital of Alabama (September 1995 - October 1999)
Provided developmental screenings for children 12 months to 7 years of age typically born prematurely and diagnosed as Low Birthweight. Cognitive assessments included the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II, the Differential Ability Scales, and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Wrote brief summaries indicating the interpretations of the tests and necessary referrals. Supervisor: Fred Biasini, Ph.D.
