The Institute on Community Integration’s Renáta Tichá led a U.S. delegation of special educators, social workers, vocational rehabilitation specialists, and others to Havana, Cuba in November – in the midst of Hurricane Rafael – on a mission to understand more about the country’s special education system. More


Training for Law Enforcment Officers on Interacting with Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

UCCEDD team member, Erica Harris, trains police academy cadets and law enforcement officers on interacting with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her trainings for law enforcement officers are OPATA-approved (the state agency in Ohio for Law Enforcment that approves continuing education for officers) and have been featured in local newspapers. Erica also consults with The Arc's National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability and is part of a team funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance to create a national initiative to enhance police engagement with people with behavioral health conditions and developmental disabilities. More

On February 27th, the Center on Disability Studies (HI-UCEDD) welcomed over 750 attendees representing 12 countries from across the globe to Honolulu, Hawaiʻi to the 39th Annual Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity both online and in-person. In celebration of the conference theme, Beyond Access: Building a Culture of Belonging we aimed to explore how we all live to belong, to be part of something greater than ourselves. More
