Although durable medical equipment such as walkers, crutches and canes, is available to those who need adaptive equipment, it is both minimally functional in outdoor exercise, and stigmatizing in appearance. These two features create major barriers to participation in fitness activity in outdoor, public, social environments for the growing population of over 6.6 million individuals who need adaptive equipment to safely engage in exercise, ultimately resulting in sedentary lifestyles, and deterioration in health. To meet the need for usable, functional, well-designed adaptive mobility equipment, that provides feedback to the user and providers, AFARI, state-of-the art, aesthetically designed fitness equipment, was developed, enabling persons who need or want balance, stability, and/or weight bearing assistance to safely participate in outdoor movement without stigma.
