The effects, stigmas, and needs associated with hyperacusis
Product Description:
Hyperacusis occurs when a person's hearing threshold, is overly sensitive to sounds. People with hyperacusis are unable to withstand the sounds to which others are able to listen without discomfort. This disorder is typically associated with other pathologies such as autism. Over the head ear muffs or ear plugs are currently marketed for temporary relief for these individuals. However, these types of hearing protections can cause the hyperacusis to worsen. The individual experiences more of a sensitivity to sounds after removal of this protection. This increase in sensitivity can result in phonophobia, fear of sounds, which can ultimately lead to social isolation. This study explores the effects, needs, and stigmas associated with hyperacusis.
