Report on Speaking Up for Us (SUFU) Volunteering Project with Maine Coast Heritage Trust
Product Description:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a volunteering opportunity with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) for members of Speaking Up for Us (SUFU), a statewide organization run by and for people who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The volunteering opportunities took place at four land trust sites. We hoped to learn a number of things about the experiences of SUFU volunteers including the following: what they did when they volunteered; how much time they typically spent at the land trust site when volunteering; what they hoped to accomplish by volunteering; what they did accomplish; whether they learned anything by volunteering, including learning job skills; their satisfaction with the volunteering experience; how this experience compared with other volunteering experiences; the extent to which the project helped volunteers connect socially with others; whether anyone obtained employment or began volunteering in other settings; and the support they received from professional staff. Surveys were administered to each participating SUFU volunteer by the researcher twice; before the volunteering experience began and again at least six months after they had begun volunteering.
