Product Description:
The Cognitive Demands Checklist for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CDC4AAC) is an online checklist for clinicians and device/app developers that uses existing research bases to identify the attention, memory, and executive function demands that different AAC technology features impose upon people with complex communication needs. The CDC4AAC was developed through the RERC on AAC. There are 85 features presented in this tool that fall into the four categories of access, display, language and output. For each feature, we tried to identify research that demonstrated the cognitive requirements needed for effective use. With case examples, we will demonstrate how the tool functions as a resource for person-technology matching during clinical assessments, and discuss how the tool can guide design and production of new AAC technologies. We challenge AAC researchers to continue gaining knowledge about cognition and AAC so that our assistive technologies have greater impacts on daily communication.
