Product Description:
This study describes the experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) working in sheltered workshops and compares them to those working in community employment. In particular, the study investigates how employment affects social capital creation. ?Social capital? refers to relationships among individuals, and the benefits and resources that are mutually produced from exchanges. Social capital extends the concept of community inclusion by considering reciprocity and the contributions of individuals with ID. Recently, the world of work has been identified as an emerging locus of community. The study?s methodology was semi-structured, qualitative interviews and direct observation at two types of employment settings. Primary respondents (n=29) were individuals with ID; secondary respondents (n=55) were family members and employment staff.
