This study examined the impact of environmental features of residential settings on the level of adaptive behavior, community integration, and health of adults with mental retardation over an eight-year period. It followed 186 residents who all lived in nursing homes at baseline. Specific environmental aspects studied include type and size of residential facilities, staff-resident ratio, extent to which residents were permitted to make choices, physical attractiveness of the residences, and extent of family involvement.
