Collaboration in Special Education: Parent professional training
Product Description:
This article describes a four-year training project designed to foster successful partnerships between school personnel and parents of children with disabilities by disseminating knowledge about the special education process. A train-the-trainers model was used to prepare parent-professional teams to deliver a nine-hour training course on special education laws and processes, Individual Education Program (IEP) planning, person-centered planning, and collaboration. The training was delivered to audiences comprised of both parents and professionals in the communities where they resided. Over a four year period, 1,328 participants from 103 Connecticut communities were trained. This project resulted in a training network that continues to provide information and skills to parents and educators.
