The Oversimplification of Horney's Construct of Ideal Self
Product Description:
L. W. Samstag (2007) suggests that Horney?s construct of the ideal self is based on the expectations of others. This interpersonal explanation oversimplifies Horney?s theory, neglecting the intrapsychic conceptualization of the ideal self based on unrealistic expectations a client might develop for him or her self, apart from the expectations of others. Horney warns against a one-sided focus on either interpersonal or intrapsychic factors when analyzing neuroses. To ameliorate neuroses, Horney proposes that a therapist must analyze the interconnectedness of the ideal self with other factors in the personality. The author concludes that an accurate conceptualization of the ideal self is necessary to provide effective psychotherapy and to avoid further self-alienation.
