Functional assessment (FA) is a set of methods for learning more about people and their challenging behaviors. FA is a structured way of looking at behavior. These methods are useful for finding answers to the question of why a person engages in disruptive or harmful behaviors. Often direct support professionals (DSPs) are asked to participate in FA. The purpose of these assessments it to help people supported have more satisfying and fulfilling lives. FA includes careful observation, asking good questions, and working with others. This course reviews terms and concepts of behavior. It reviews other forms of assessment and the role of comprehensive assessment in functional assessment. Finally, it shows how to use this information to plan for people.
