LEND: Poster Presentation at AUCD National Meeting: Supporting parents with cognitive limitations: practical tools for service providers

Objectives and Problem Statement: Parents with cognitive limitations often experience difficulties in conceptual, practical, and social functioning. Their children may be at greater risk for foster care placement due to abuse and neglect. Social service providers, often the first support personnel to encounter these parents, need tools to help them identify and assist those who are at risk. However, accessible resources to these providers are limited because most available assessment tools require professional and educational training and traditional interventions need to be specialized for this population. The purpose of this project is twofold: (1) to create a valid screening tool which can be used by social service providers to make referrals for additional evaluations by mental health professionals, and (2) to provide a resource guide for service providers to help them support parents with cognitive limitations.
