A report describing alternate assessments taken by some students with disabilities to demonstrate performance on the same achievement standards as the general state grade-level assessments. Massachusetts has developed an alternate assessment based on grade-level achievement standards consisting of a structured portfolio of student work (known as a "competency portfolio") collected over a period of time and reviewed by experts in the content area. These are used for school accountability in grades 3-8, and to meet the graduation standard at grade 10.
