The relationship between brain and physical functions in middle-age.
Product Description:
We examined the association between cognitive function and lower body (LB) physical performance in the African American Health (AAH) project. AAH is a population-based panel study of 998 African Americans born in 1936-1950 from two diverse socioeconomic areas of St. Louis, MO. Baseline measures of LB function included chair stands, semi-tandem stand, tandem stand eyes open, tandem stand eyes closed, 1-leg stand, and preferred gait speed. Grip strength and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were also measured. Cognitive function was measured on all subjects using: Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) and Animal Naming (AN). Baseline scores for each cognitive test were divided into tertiles, and performance between groups for each function was compared using ANOVAs for trend. There was significant and monotonic worsening of the 6 LB performance measures, grip strength, and PEF across the cognitive tertiles.
