Product Description:
Education has traditionally been viewed as a key to a successful adult life. Completion of high school, followed by some type of postsecondary education, has been shown to make a difference in the ability of individuals to obtain employment, earn a livable wage, and develop their unique potential. However, too often individuals with disabilities encounter insurmountable barriers to postsecondary education and subsequent employment. Among the barriers are low expectations for high school students with disabilities, a shortage of role models, lack of training for postsecondary educators in delivering instruction to students with disabilities, physical barriers in the educational environment, and unavailability of support services. The challenge of overcoming these barriers is enormous. There are, however, many postsecondary programs that are succeeding at the task, and many students with disabilities who are achieving their educational and vocational goals with their support. In this Impact, some of these programs and students are described. It is our hope that their success stories will offer readers strategies and encouragement for making postsecondary education available to all.
