Product Description:
There is all too often a great distance socially between persons with and without disabilities. This is especially true when more severe disabilities, such as developmental disabilities, are present. To overcome social barriers and create a sense of inclusion for all in our communities, a "common ground" must be established between persons with and without disabilities. This will only occur if members of both groups have opportunities to get to know each other in a variety of environments and activities. In this Impact are profiles of a number of organizations, workplaces, and schools that are enabling people to find that common ground as they share experiences ranging from worship services to volunteer and paid work to dating. In these settings, people can connect as individuals who have similar interests, backgrounds, or goals rather than as labels or stereotypes. Such opportunities allow the unique capacities and gifts of each person to be truly appreciated. It is our hope that through the information and personal stories in these pages service providers will find ideas for expanding social inclusion opportunities and minimizing barriers to full membership in the community for adults with developmental disabilities.
