Heller, T. (2000). Supporting adults with intellectual disabilities and their families: A literature review. Aging and Developmental Disability: Current Research, Programming, and Practice ImplicationsThe Haworth Press, 59-73. This paper reviews the literature on later-life planning interventions
that aim to support adults with intellectual disabilities and
their families in planning and advocacy. While most of these interventions
include both the person with a disability and the families at least to
some degree, they differ in terms of the target group that is the primary
focus. Hence, this review first examines family-focused strategies and
secondly strategies focused on the person with disabilities. Thirdly, the
paper discusses implications for further practice and research on promoting
planning for the future of adults with intellectual disabilities.
