This report explores item difficulty estimates for reading and math items administered with or without the read-aloud accommodation. In a unique approach to analyzing extant data, this study defined four groups of students in a way that helped to control for confounding effects that often occur when analyzing extant data. The findings revealed an effect of read aloud for math items. For reading, the results raised questions about the meaning of reading scores for those who struggle with reading when they have the test read to them.
