Flying Together Beyond Loss: Grieving Support for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
Product Description:
Poster presented at the AUCD conference With their extended life expectancy, adults with developmental disabilities (DD) now often experience loss of caregivers (e.g., death of an elderly parent). However, their cognitive and behavioral challenges limit their opportunities to grieve. For adults with DD to comprehend such a significant life event, innovative/expanded grief communication tools beyond traditional ones are necessary. The present pilot research project utilizes aerial-movement art as the main communication tool for a three-month weekly group grieving workshop in which adults with DD (n=15-20) are given opportunities to explore, express, and process their abstract and complicated thoughts and/or feelings that result from their significant loss.
